アベニュー Q はリアルライフを描いた作品です。仕事を見つけること、職を失うこと、人種差別について学ぶこと、アパートを手に入れること、アパートを追い出されること、人と違うこと、恋に落ちること、コミットメントを避けることなど、そして新しい世界を発見すること。テレビ画面のプロローグは､世界のこの小さな片隅に私たちを案内してくれます。

Avenue Q is about real life. It's about finding a job, losing a job, learning about racism, getting an apartment, getting kicked out of your apartment, being different, falling in love, promiscuity, avoiding commitment, hangovers, Internet porn and discovering the world. A prologue on a television screen introduces us to this little corner of the world.

大学を卒業したばかりの希望と英語の学士号しか持っていないプリンストンは、彼の人生の目的とニューヨークの手頃な価格のアパートを探しています。彼はアベニューQで、「FOR RENT」の看板のある建物を見つけるのでした。ほどなく彼はケイト・モンスター、ブライアン、ブライアンのフィアンセで日系アメリカ人のクリスマスイブなど、フレンドリーな近所の人たちと出会います。 建物の管理員は、元子役テレビスターのゲーリー・コールマン。 ゲイリーとすべての住人は、それぞれ個人的な不幸について歌っています。 プリンストンはアパートを借りて皆に迎え入れられ、プリンストンとケイト モンスターの間でロマンスが始まります。

Recent college graduate, Princeton, only with hope and a Bachelor's Degree in English, is looking for two things: his life's purpose and an affordable apartment in New York City. On Avenue Q, he finds a building with a sign advertising "Apartment for Rent. He soon meets a motley but friendly assortment of neighbors, including Kate Monster, Brian, Brian's Japanese-American fiancée Christmas Eve. The superintendent of the building is none other than former child TV star, Gary Coleman. Gary and all of the tenants each sing about their personal misfortunes. Princeton rents an apartment and is welcomed to the neighborhood, and the stirrings of romance begin between Princeton and Kate Monster.

ブライアンとクリスマスイブが引っ越したアパートの部屋を借りたいとある人が訪ねてきます。なんと彼女は皆さんご存じのあの娘です。（※このシーンは一部C.A.T.オリジナルです。） その時プリンストンは彼の人生の目的が人助けをすることだと言い出しますが、それは裏目に出てしまい、なんでこんなにも人生は上手くいかないんだろうと嘆きます。彼は住人たちの「人生において起こることは今だけだよ」という言葉を受けてどんなことでも前向きに受け入れようと決心します。

A girl is looking for a room to rent where it happened to be one vacated by Brian and Kate. Yes, she is THAT girl we all know. (CAT's original scene) At that right moment and time, Princeton realized that it was his time to shine! He felt he found the purpose he was looking for all this time. It's to help people in desperate need! But it turned out to be going the wrong way as usual. He became utterly emotional about why his life always ends up being disappointed. The residents of the apartment were encouraging him that "it's only for now". Soon, Princeton accepted the fact and positively moved forward.
